Some people just LOVE what they do and that energy comes through in their work and spreads to the people they work with. Nancy Harvey of Holiday House weddings is one of those people. We always have SO much fun when she is designing a wedding and we truly love working with her.
Holiday House Weddings has been providing unique floral designs for Outer Banks weddings for almost 20 years. After training extensively with the previous owners, Nancy Harvey took over years ago as the owner and lead designer. Nancy began her career as a creative designer for Hallmark cards. As an artist, she loved the creativity of her job at Hallmark but was tired of being behind a computer and wanted to spend more time outside in nature. She relocated to the Outer Banks and spent years working for the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo. At Holiday House Weddings, Nancy thrives in her role – creating beautiful floral designs on the Outer Banks is the perfect mix of working with nature, being creative and getting outside on the day of the wedding.
Nancy loves working with brides because she gets to express their vision with her own creative flair. The day, of course, is all about the bride – but after working closely together, brides gain the confidence to let Nancy work her magic.
Nancy explains, “We work together extensively with lots of visual references and then the day of the wedding I typically don’t even need to talk to the bride. The brides are always so thrilled! It’s probably the main reason I do this, to see that smile on their face!”
This year Nancy has been seeing things trend towards arrangements being more personal. It’s not just a colorway, or a favorite flower – the arrangements are infused with meaning. As far as construction, Harvey explains, “We are still in that casual, gathered from the garden look but I am seeing a bit of a return towards formality. Even though the wedding is at the beach, they want to show their formal tastes. I just did two formal bouquets for brides last week!”
When asked what kind of arrangements she likes best, Nancy explained: “I’m known as the Gala girl! I do a lot of Galas for large organizations on the Outer Banks – I like there to be a wow factor, for the arrangements to have drama. When you create a room full of arrangements and 1/3 are tall 1/3 are medium and 1/3 are low – this creates drama for the venue.”
She adds, “Most Outer Banks weddings are destination weddings and the bride is the hostess for all those guests coming from out of town. Brides are showing just how much they care about their guests’ time and effort through the details of their floral arrangements.”
There are almost no flower limitations when having a wedding on the Outer Banks and Holiday House can get almost any kind of flower you want – suppliers and growers work hard to make most anything available year-round. That said, if you are die hard in LOVE with peonies the peonies that growers supply in the fall are smaller than the big beautiful blooms of spring – “If you love peonies have a Spring wedding!” Harvey exclaims.
Wind, of course, is always a factor on the Outer Banks but Holiday House has extensive experience professionally securing arbors and anything that will be outdoors, so that wind is not even an issue.
